Tabor Academy students to row in Head of the Charles this weekend

Oct 19, 2016

On the banks of the Charles River, thousands of rowers will converge for two days to navigate the world renowned Head of the Charles Regatta, and this year two Tabor Academy teams will be part of the competition.

For the first time in many years, Tabor will compete in the Youth Men’s Fours and the Youth Women’s Eights on Sunday, Oct. 23. Tabor’s two entries, training all fall, were selected to join more than 80 schools in each division.

Seniors Jack Gordon and Jon Mabie of Marion, Bryce Finley, Sam McClennon, and  Jackson Hawkins will compete in the Youth Men’s Fours. For the girls, Mari Daly, Ellie Townsend and Sarah Crosby of Marion, Sam Raisidies, Victoria Milso, Maddy LaCasse, Hannah Strom, Piper Cole and Summer Hofeldt will row in the Youth Women’s eight.

The start times for each event are subject to change and are posted at http://www.hocr.org.  (At the time of publication: the girls were to start Sunday at 10:05 a.m. and the boys at 11:33 a.m.)

Six bridges and seven turns challenge every crew to steer the best line over the three-mile course. Crews start against the clock just before the Boston University Bridge in staggered order with two to three boat lengths separating the shells. At this point, crews begin to pass one another as each jockey for the best time down the course. An entire section of the official rulebook governs how and when crews can pass as well as what kind of penalty they receive if improperly passing another shell.

Time penalties from 10 seconds to two minutes are assessed for various infractions with the severest consequence being disqualification. Tabor coxswains practiced on the course prior to the race and look to pass several boats on the way to the finish line.

Tabor Academy will have a fan tent in Reunion Village along the Charles to cheer on the rowers as well as the alumni who are rowing for their colleges.
