Tabor Boy to race to Bermuda

Apr 23, 2019

MARION — Tabor Academy’s 92 foot sail training schooner, called Tabor Boy, will sail in the Marion Bermuda Race for the first time this year, steered by a crew of current students and Tabor alumni and headed by a faculty member.

The boat will be one of two in the classic vessel category, facing off against the Spirit of Bermuda.

The crew will also take on the challenge in navigating solely by the stars, one of only 18 vessels to do so. Tabor faculty member and the boat’s Captain, James Geil, teaches a course on celestial navigation, and will give his students the chance to put their skills to the test in the race.

Twelve students will be joined by seven alumni crew members, three licensed mates, and Captain James Geil at the helm. The heavy student makeup of the crew will also allow the boat to compete for the Offshore Youth Challenge Trophy.

Tabor Boy will host an Open Ship for Tabor alumni, parents, and friends in the area, and any prospective students and their families are invited. The reception will be held in Hamilton on June 23 starting at 5:30 p.m.
