Tabor to host Special Olympics Fitness Day
On Saturday, April 23, current and future Special Olympics athletes of all ages will come participate in the first ever Tabor Academy Special Olympics Fitness Day.
Focusing on a variety of sports and motor skill development, athletes will visit a number of stations, each with a different sport theme. Events will include: soccer, flag football, softball, basketball, bocce, powerlifting, gymnastics and floor hockey.
Tabor student leaders, supported by faculty and staff, are planning an action-packed morning for the athletes across campus. They will look to build on the relationships they have created after a year of programs aimed at young athletes and adults alike.
This year, Tabor Academy has offered weekly events for young athletes and their families to develop skills they will need to join the formal Special Olympics program when the are older. They have also made a bridge to adult athletes through the Valentine’s Day Basketball Tournament hosted at Tabor, resulting in one of the teams making Tabor an alternate practice site.
Tabor would like to widen the net further and bring in more area athletes and families with intellectual disabilities to come out and enjoy the day and become a part of this opportunity to learn more about Special Olympics. Tabor students will run the games and share some of their non-athletic passions by providing musical entertainment and holding craft stations.
Tim Cleary and Lauren Boucher, Tabor faculty, are handling logistics. Tabor Academy invites the public to join in the action.
There will be a morning fitness walk around Marion Village with stops at the Fire Station and Bi-Centennial Park. All are invited to join athletes in the walk and then stay to cheer on the athletes.
