Tabor senior renovates, donates boats to sailing programs
Tabor Academy senior and sailing enthusiast Asa Smith is looking to create a few opportunities for young sailors with disabilities.
Over the past semester Smith has completed seven model boats as part of his senior project, which he plans to donate to sailing programs for children with disabilities across New England.
The seven boats were left unfinished from previous students of Tabor’s ship and boat design class. Smith said he decided to complete the work on the models so the boats could be put to good use.
Last year, Smith donated two model boats to a sailing program for children with disabilities in Boston.
“We donated boats that were leftover and it was a hit,” he said. “I knew we had seven more near completion so I thought I’d do this as my senior project.”
Smith spent one month completing the work.
“The seven boats were in various states when Asa began working on them,” said Tabor’s nautical sciences instructor Captain David Bill. “A lot of them needed radios and to be test sailed. Some were leaking in the water so we had to troubleshoot.”
After putting the finishing touches on the models, Smith spent a few more months working with children’s sailing programs to decide on where to send his boats.
Smith will donate two boats to Duxbury Bay Maritime School, two to the New Bedford Community Boating Center and one boat to the Schwartz Center in Dartmouth.
Smith will also send two boats to Tabor alum Robie Pierce for his annual One-Design Regatta for sailors with disabilities in New York.
“The models deserved a good home with families who couldn’t afford to buy a model,” Bill said. “The kids in these programs can race in pools. They don’t have to get in the water.”
Undertaking a senior project at Tabor is an academic path chosen by the student and is no small task, Bill said. Smith had to have his project approved by a committee, complete journal entries every day detailing his progress and write an extensive final paper.
Smith, a native of Wellesley, is a member of Tabor’s sailing team. Having spent most of his life on the water, Smith said he was excited to take part in Tabor’s nautical science electives.
“I took classes and I really loved that energy of building,” Smith said.
After graduation he will work as a sailing instructor in Hyannis Port before starting his freshman year at Union College in Albany.
