Talent show puts Sippican School students on stage

Jun 4, 2015

Sippican School students took to the stage Wednesday evening and performed a variety of acts for the annual talent show.

Erin Furfey, a sixth grade teacher and one of the show’s organizers, said more students signed on to show off skills that included singing, dancing, gymnastics, comedy and even computer coding.

“Last year, we had thirty eight acts and this year there are fifty two acts signed up,” she said.

Students must first audition in front of teachers and then they have a rehearsal the day before the show to hone their acts.

The event is one the year’s highlights for the young performers.

“The students have been talking about this since September,” said Amanda LaMarier, the show’s music coordinator and a special education teacher.

The show began with Max Richins singing the Star Spangled Banner in front of an American flag projected on the curtains behind him.

Next, an enthusiastic Alex Pithier showed the audience how he wrote a line of computer code. As a projector displayed the lines of code, Alex explained how he manipulated data in an educational program.

The singing acts included Marilyn Pepin who dressed as Princess Anna from “Frozen” for the song “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” Aurora Martin sang “Bubbly” and Georgia Bailey sang “Let It Go” while also dancing.

Others showed off their musical chops on piano, guitar and ukulele.

Sarah Wymen strummed “Riptide” on guitar while Lila Hurburt played "Frozen Heart" on her ukulele. Several students played piano such as Madison McCendin, Amelia Russell and Katelyn Luong.

In addition to the show, donations were being accepted to launch the Sippican School Drama Club. Show organizer and third grade teacher MJ Menezes said she hopes the club will be ready to go in 2016.
