Things to do: Eat, celebrate, attend a fundraiser

Friday, Sept. 13

Learn about Downton Abbey.

 The Sippican Woman’s Club 2019-2020 season begins  with “The Fashions of Downton Abbey.” Karen Antonowicz, an expert in the field of Historic Costume and Textiles will give a presentation about the lives and fashions of the residents of Downton Abbey. Attendees will explore the styles of 1912 through the 1920s, tracking the historical and fashion changes of the time. 

The program will be held at Handy’s Tavern, 152 Front Street, Marion. It begins at 12:30 p.m. with a finger food luncheon, followed by a short business meeting and program. Non-members are welcome for a $5 guest fee. New members are always welcome.

Eat with the church.

The Congregational Church will resume hosting its Open Table meals in Reynard Hall.

There is no charge for the meal, although the church does accept donations. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and supper will be served at 5 p.m. Guests are free to invite a friend, neighbor, or relative. 

Saturday, Sept. 14

Buy a Plant.

The Friends of the Mattapoisett Council on Aging will host their Third Annual Plant Sale on Saturday Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

The sale will be held on the lawn of the Mattapoisett Library. The plant sale includes perennials, houseplants and small trees, as well as a new raffle. 

The Friends will be selling raffle tickets to win a wheelbarrow filled with garden supplies, plants, vegetables and other surprises. Tickets are 6 for $5 or 1 for $1, and can be purchased at the plant sale. 

Attend a fundraiser.

The Rochester Historical Society will hold its 50th anniversary fundraiser. 

The event will be at the Rochester Council on Aging at 67 Dexter lane from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

The celebration and fundraising event will include a walk down memory lane, lots of stories, a lunch, display of historical items, a raffle, Rochester Historical Society items for sale and more.

Celebrate Bird Island.

The Marion Harbormaster’s Department will host the Bird Island Lighthouse Bicentennial Celebration at the Marion Music Hall at 164 Front Street at 4 p.m. There will be music, a cash bar, small bites and desserts. All proceeds benefit the Bird Island Lighthouse Fund. The event will have a silent auction of Bird-Island-Lighthouse-themed items, such as a signed photograph by David Zapatka and a signed print by Anthony Days.

Tickets are $15 each and can be bought at the Marion General Store, Serendipity by the Sea, the Harbormaster’s office at the Town House and the dock office. For questions or to purchase tickets  call the Harbormaster’s Office at 508-748-3515.
