Eat a Hawaiian dinner.

The Friends of the Rochester Senior Center are hosting a fundraiser dinner at 5:30 p.m. The theme for the evening is Hawaiian. Call the Senior Center at 508-763-8723 to make reservations and for details about the event.

Friday, Aug. 16

Appreciate art.

Marion artist Nancy Dyer Mitton and her New York City counterpart Robert Seyffert, will showcase their work with dual exhibitions of their paintings at the Marion Art Center from Aug. 16 through Sept. 28. An artists’ reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Mitton and Seyffert are fellow painters and friends. They met at The National Arts Club in New York City. Earlier this year, Mitton won First Prize in the 2019 NAC Exhibiting Artist Exhibition.

Saturday, Aug. 17

Watch a model plane contest.

From 9 a.m. to the early afternoon Bristol County Radio Control Club, will host its John Nicolaci Memorial Float Fly contest. Contestants will fly model planes over Mary’s Pond, with the entrance opposite 507 Mary’s Pond Road. The contest is an Academy of Model Aeronautics sanctioned event, and pilots must be members of that organization. 

Go to a Grange Fair.

The 109th Annual Grange Fair, at the Rochester Grange Hall will be held from 1:30 to 7 p.m. Admission to the fair is free. The Massachusetts Department of Agriculture and the Massachusetts State Grange will also hold a Ham and Bean supper at 6 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children under 10. Tickets for the supper will go on sale at the door. Fair organizers will also hold an auction just after the fair ends, at 7:15 p.m. 

Monday, Aug. 19

Explore regional art.

Jill Sanford from Art For Your Mind will give a talk about America’s artistic regions at the Benjamin Cushing Community Center, 465 Mill Street in Marion at 12:30 p.m. Sanford will also bring a collection of images describing America’s diverse landforms, lifestyles, cultural influences, and historic events. From New England, to the Midwest, to the West Coast, artists have made different decisions on how to portray the areas that they came from. 

Wednesday, Aug. 21

Drink mocktails.

Delia Cabe, author of “Storied Bars of New York: Where the Literary Luminaries Go to Drink,” will speak at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library  from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The book celebrates the best literary pubs, cocktail bars, and taverns of New York City. Library staff and volunteers will be serving mocktails in the tradition of New York establishments. Recipes will be distributed, and books will be available for purchase and signing from the author. Register in advance by calling the library at 508-758-4171, emailing spizzolato@sailsinc.org, or stopping by the adult circulation desk.
