Things to do: Meditate, learn about history, listen to music

Aug 28, 2019

There’s a lot to do in the tri-town area this week. For a full schedule of events go to www.sippican.theweektoday.com/calendar.

Friday, Aug. 30

See some art.

Starting at 10 a.m., the Mattapoisett Museum will be hosting an art exhibit called “Inspiration: Time & Texture” featuring works by local artists inspired by the museum’s collections. Each artist draws inspiration from an object or aspect of the collection to create a site-specific installation. This exhibition is an homage to Mattapoisett’s visual culture with reverence for the handmade. It will continue through September.

Go to a concert.

The Marion Concert Band will close its 2019 season indoors at the Sippican School at 7 p.m., with a free concert in the style of the Boston Pops Orchestra. The program includes pieces by former Pops arranger Leroy Anderson and former Pops conductor John Williams.

Tuesday, Sept. 3

Learn to meditate.

Susan Pisapia will start a meditation class on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Benjamin D. Cushing Community Center. Pisapia has taught meditation for 25 years, and is also trained in mindful based stress reduction. The class is open to both beginners and experienced meditators.

Tour the town.

Seth Mendell will offer his third and final walking tour of Mattapoisett for the season  from 2 p.m. to about 3:15 p.m. Learn about historic buildings, the electric rail, the saltworks on Goodspeed Island, the Charles King Mansion at the mouth of the river, and “The Dude Special.” Visualize how whale ships were built in the park and how the British attempted to burn the shipyards during the War of 1812.

Walks meet at the Mattapoisett Museum, and are free for members and $5 for guests.
