Thursday, Aug. 8
Paint space.
Rochester’s Plumb Library will host two space painting sessions with artist Kelly Smith. The first one, for ages 6 to 11 will be held Thursday, Aug. 8 at 3:30 p.m. Smith will give her pupils step-by-step instructions to create a space-themed painting. All materials will be provided, except an apron or old paint shirt. No painting experience is necessary, but registration is. The class is limited to 10 participants. At 5 p.m. on Aug. 8 Kelly will also host the same class for ten students, ages 12 and up.
Hear a band.
At 7 p.m. New Hampshire indie-folk band, Party of the Sun, will start playing at the Mattapoisett Museum. Tickets for the concert are now discounted and are available through Eventbrite.
Hear about sharks.
Also at 7 p.m., Amy Kukulya, from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will present on how her institution uses an autonomous underwater vehicle to track sharks. Kukulya will speak at the Marion Natural history Museum.
Friday, Aug. 9
See a comedy.
Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” will make its final tri-town appearance at 5 p.m. at Tabor Academy. The production modernizes the classic play and sets it at a present day country club while also genderswapping several of the characters.
Hear music.
Visit the Marion Art Center at 8 p.m. to see Shaun England and his band joined by Jim Robitaille in a concert that will fuse jazz, blues and rock.
Saturday, Aug. 10
Visit the Rochester Country Fair.
The fair will take place Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 65 Pine Street. While some of the musicians and events are cancelled, there will still be tractor pulls, an ice cream eating and horseshoe contest, vendors and children’s activities.
Kayak the Sippican River.
The Buzzards Bay Coalition and Sippican Lands Trust will offer a chance to kayak the Weweantic and Sippican Rivers starting at 10 a.m at the boat launch at the Wareham parking and recreation area along Route 195. Bring your own kayak, register for the event and check your email to make sure the event is still on.
Go to a dog’s party.
Rochester’s Plumb Library will host a party from 10:30 to noon to say thank you to its therapy dog Amos and his handler, Holly, as Amos retires from his work as a therapy dog. Participants should register and bring gifts or memories of times with Amos.
Sunday, Aug. 11
Play ball.
The Gateway Babe Ruth season may have just ended, but the summer camp is just starting. The camp will take place four Saturdays in August at Dexter Lane Ballfield or Washburn Park.
Monday, Aug. 12
Hear history.
On Aug. 12 at 12:30 p.m. Sheryl Faye will put on a historical lecture and performance where she will play Abigail Adams as part of a Monday lecture series at the Council on Aging. A catered lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Reservations are required for the lunch. Call 508-748-3570 to reserve a spot.
Eat with the COA.
The Rochester COA’s annual Summer Picnic will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The menu is barbecue with traditional sides, baked beans, corn on the cob and dessert. Advance sign-up is required in order to have the right amount of food. Call 508-763-8723 to make a reservation.
Tuesday, Aug. 13
Shop outside.
The Summer Farmer’s Market will come to Old Rochester Junior High School from 3 to 6 p.m. bringing a variety of wares, children’s entertainment and music.
Learn a culinary gadget.
Liz Barbour will be at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a cooking class using an instant pot. Barbour will demonstrate two recipes and offer samples. The program is free and open to the public. Register for this event by calling 508-758-4171 or emailing rsmith@sailsinc.org, providing the number of people attending and contact information.
Hear history.
On Aug. 13 at the Museum at 7 p.m., Seth Mendell will speak about whaling in New Bedford, Nantucket and Mattapoisett as part of his history lecture series.
Wednesday, Aug. 14
Learn about turtles.
Turtle Week at the Mattapoisett Library will be from Aug. 13 to Aug. 17 and will feature a special presentation from the New England Coastal Wildlife Association at 2 p.m. at the Mattapoisett Library.
