MARION — The Rochester and Mattapoisett Police Departments and Marion Harbormaster Department joined forces for the first session of “Cruising with a Cop,” a new educational boat tour that made waves with Old Rochester Regional High School students.

“We were able to take out on the high seas [with] some amazing young adults today. Not sure who had a more enjoyable time: the cops or the kids!” said Rochester Police Chief Michael Assad via Facebook.

Old Rochester students met with the officers at the Marion Maritime Center, where they learned about boating safety precautions. Afterward, the crew cruised to Bird Island on Marion Harbormaster powerboats, toured the Bird Island Lighthouse and walked on the beach.

“This event would not have been possible without the dedication, coordination and teamwork displayed by everyone involved,” said Assad. “The support on the water by the Marion Harbormaster, Mattapoisett Harbormaster and the hard work of our Community Engagement Team onshore and behind the scenes turned a vision into reality — and brought our community together in a truly unforgettable way.”

He thanked Adam Murphy, the Marion Harbormaster, the Mattapoisett Police Department and the Rochester Police Department’s community engagement team for making the tour a “huge success.”

“Here’s to many more successful cruises ahead!” said Assad.
