Tri-town residents share holiday treats on ORCTV
With embroidered chef jackets, an antique nut grinder and lots of moxie, Art and Lyric Beecher were ready for their cooking show debut on Friday afternoon.
The father-daughter duo was one of seven groups who signed up to share a favorite holiday recipe with ORCTV's viewership. The recipes – from no-bake peppermint cheesecake to chocolate snowball cookies – will be compiled by ORCTV staff and premiered on Christmas Day.
“I figured it'd be a good, easy way for people to come in and do something simple and get acquainted with the new kitchen,” said Gary Lawrence, ORCTV assistant director.
The ORCTV studio is equipped with a glass stove top, an oven, a refrigerator and lots of cameras to capture budding cooks and their delicious dishes.
On Friday, Art, a Wareham resident, and Lyric, a student at Sippican School, didn't need too much coaxing to feel comfortable on camera.
“She loves her cooking shows,” said Art.
The two have been cooking together for three years, and Lyric is something of a gourmand. She got her own bread machine a few Christmases ago and knows the meaning of mis en place, something she explained during their cooking segment.
The father and daughter, wearing matching jackets that read “Chef Da” and “Chef Lyric,” respectively, shared their recipe for Watergate salad. Made green by adding pistachio pudding, the pair described the dish as “holidaysical.”
“You could also use it for St. Patrick's Day,” said Lyric, 10.
The retro recipe also included mini marshmallows, Cool Whip and walnuts or pecans, which Art ground using his Southern grandmother's nut grinder.
“It's a seventies kind of salad from my childhood,” he said.
Though, Lyric explained, it's not exactly a nutritious salad.
“Just because we call it a salad, it doesn't necessarily mean it's healthy, but it is delicious,” Lyric told the TV audience. “There's no such thing as too much Cool Whip.”
The theatrical duo explained their dish in under 20 minutes, even showing (though the magic of television) the chilled and finished product.
Executive Director Robert Chiarito said he's been impressed by the folks who came in to share their recipes, particularly the kids.
“They're naturals.”
Tune in to ORCTV on Christmas to watch the Beechers and other local cooks share their recipes.
