Turk’s Seafood family honors founding father

For Turk’s Seafood owner, Richard Pasquill, Jr., his family is just a bunch of “fish guys.”

Since opening Turk’s in 1989, the Pasquill family has seen business boom and expand at their Route 6 location in Mattapoisett.

What started as a fish market has grown to also include a restaurant and sushi bar.

On Sunday, June 17, the Pasquill family gathered to pay tribute to the man who started it all, Richard “Turk” Pasquill, Sr.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of their father’s passing, the Pasquills renamed the renovated and expanded sushi bar, Big Turk’s Fish and Saki Bar.

To cap off the celebration brunch, the family also unveiled a portrait of Big Turk, painted by New Bedford artist Arthur Moniz.

For Pasquill, Jr., the Father’s Day reception was about remembering the man who taught him everything he knew about the family business.

“I went right from high school into the business,” he said. “My father just said, ‘here you go,’ and handed me the business. He was there with support and confidence until his death in 1992.”

The family business was built by Big Turk “from the ground up,” Pasquill said.

Like most families in the fish business, Pasquill said his thrived due to a strong sense of community.

“This is who we are. We’re fish guys,” Pasquill said. “The seafood industry is real friendly. The relationships are there. A lot of families grow up in it. We take care of each other.”
