Rochester police responded to two separate accidents on Tuesday, Aug. 18. The first occurred at 2:17 p.m. and involved four cars at the intersection of New Bedford Road and Vaughan Hill Road.

The drivers involved in the initial collision were David Bumpus of Seabreeze Drive in Dartmouth and a 16-year-old female from Freetown.

The juvenile driver failed to make a complete stop and collided with the passenger side of Bumpus’s vehicle. A second pair of drivers that collided trying to avoid the first accident were Ann Briggs of County Road in Mattapoisett and Jandira Andrade of Wing St. in New Bedford.

Police said Briggs applied her brakes to avoid crashing into Bumpus and was then rear ended by Andrade. Three cars were towed from the scene and Bumpus was arrested on an unrelated warrant.

The second accident occurred at 6:51 p.m. at the intersection of New Bedford Road and Cushman Road. It was reported as a motorcycle versus car collision. The parties involved were Robert Ryan of Nautilus St. in New Bedford, and Paul Simmons of Brownell Ave. in New Bedford.

The accident occurred when Ryan attempted a left turn onto Cushman Road. Prior to making the turn, police said he slowed down and swerved to the right. Also, his left turn signal was obstructed by a book shelf on his tailgate. According to police, Simmons said he thought that Ryan was pulling over to let him pass. Simmons attempted to pass on the left but collided with the front driver’s side of Ryan’s car and was ejected from his motorcycle. Simmons was transported to a local hospital, and his motorcycle was towed from the scene.
