Upcoming Mattapoisett Free Public Library events

Oct 1, 2011

The Mattapoisett Free Public Library has a number of events coming up.

Fiction authors reading and signing

Award-winning fiction writers Edith Pearlman ("Binocular Vision," 2011) and Daphne Kalotay ("Russian Winter," 2011) will read from their work Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m. These Boston area authors will have copies of their books available for purchase and signing.

Thinking of creating your own blog?

Professional writer and travel blogger Kathleen Allen will visit the library on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Allen is the current web content
specialist at the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

She will speak on all aspects of blogging, including:

  • Should you start a blog?
  • What should its content be?
  • Which blogging software is best for your purpose?
  • How do you maintain it and keep it interesting?

Handouts will be provided and related books will be on display.

Can and bottle drive

Support the work of the Junior Friends of the Library by recycling deposit cans and bottles at the library on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 to 10 a.m.  The Junior Friends will have their can and bottle drive on the last Saturday of each month and urges residents to save retunables for them.

Health and wellness workshop

Health coach Johanna Voss of Mattapoisett will offer a free program on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 6:30 p.m. Learn about finding and maintaining a balance in the various aspects of your life by addressing dietary and other lifestyle choices.

Universal classes

Over 500 free online classes are available to Mattapoisett Library card holders. Everything from writing and publishing to computers and test preparation is there to choose from. Visit the library's website at www.mattapoisettlibrary.org and click on the "Universal Class" link.

Letterboxing continues

During the summer reading program, "letterboxing" was introduced, and many families visited sites around Mattapoisett to find hidden treasures and leave a note for the next treasure hunter. This hobby, popular around the world, will continue at the library, and new participants are welcome.

For now, organizers are hiding letterboxes in the library. Children and their families are welcome to come to the children's room and find out what it's
all about, make a letterboxing journal, create a stamp, and join the fun.

In June, the library will host a letterboxing party to celebrate and give everyone an opportunity to show off how many letterboxes were found.

Be a detective

Solve the mystery of what great book you will read next and go on a book hunt!  Children can think of this as a literary scavenger hunt.  Stop by the children's room for the sheet of instructions. It's a great rainy day activity.

Writers' group

Everyone is welcome on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for a discussion and reading of original writing. Writers in any genre are welcome.

Friends of the Library used book sale

The next Friends used book sale will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the library's downstairs meeting room. Hundreds of books for children, young adults and adults are available for purchase at bargain prices. Donations are accepted in the library every day. Proceeds will benefit the work of the Friends.

Learn a language

Thinking of traveling abroad this year? Log on to Mango Languages on the library's home page, www.mattapoisettlibrary.org,  and you can choose from over 20 languages to learn at your own pace. A Mattapoisett library card is necessary. Stop by and apply for a free card if you don't have one.  Whether you are a beginner or just need to brush up your conversational skills, the program offers levels of practice to help you on your way.

Lego enthusiasts

The Lego Club is back! Join other Lego builders on Saturdays from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the meeting room on the lower level of the library.
