One person, so far, has pulled papers to run for the Selectman seat, left open by Steve Cushing, who said he will not run again.

Matthew VanDer Pol, who owns VanDer Pol Landscaping, decided to run for Selectman after hearing so much discussion about the Town House renovation project.

He said after receiving the Town House survey in the census, he called Selectman Steve Gonsalves to discuss and share his opinion.

After feeling so well heard by Gonsalves, he started thinking about his father’s involvement with the Planning Board in Fairhaven when he was a kid, and he decided to take action.

“I started to think about things and realized you can either sit on the sideline or get involved and be part of the decisions,” he said.

VanDer Pol said if he wins he wants to work on planning for the future, listening to voters and prioritizing projects.

“We need to look at our buildings, all our buildings…and ask where are we?” VanDer Pol said. “We need to figure out where we stand.”

The last day to file papers with the registrar is March 20 and the election is May 12.

Currently, only two people have returned their nomination papers for other positions – Patricia DeCosta, who is running for the assessor position, and Ray Pickles, the town clerk incumbent.

There are also two positions up for Marion School Committee, but no papers have yet been drawn for them.

Nomination papers for Marion’s town election are available at the Town Clerk’s office.
