Variety Show brings out local talent

Old Rochester Community Television and the Showstoppers singing group came together Sunday evening for the fourth annual “Tri Town Television Variety Show” featuring more than 40 area singers, dancers and performers.
“Viewers are prompted and encouraged to donate during the show,” said ORCTV executive director Kim Miot. “All proceeds are divided up equally and will go towards ORCTV, our youth programs and Showstoppers.”
“It’s a great opportunity for the kids. They’re getting skills and practice in front of the cameras they can’t get anywhere else.”
For Nick Claudio, an 11-year-old Mattapoisett resident and new Showstoppers member, the show was a special experience. Claudio suffered from a brain tumor and, after it was removed, he became permanently blind.
“The thing I miss most from seeing is probably playing video games on my own and playing sports,” Nick said. “I’ve learned it’s not the worst thing that can happen to you in the world. It’s not what happens to you, it’s how you handle it.” Nick handled performed Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are.”
“When something like that happens you just have to continue to function,” said Nick’s mother, Allison. “Nick has amazed me over the last couple of years. He just didn’t quit and has found new and different activities to get involved in and I think now our schedule is fuller than it’s ever been.”
Rochester singer and songwriter Jillian Jensen played guitar and sang Maroon Five’s “She Will Be Loved,” as well as a song she wrote herself, “Perfect Timing.”
“I started singing when I was two years-old,” said nineteen-year old Jillian. “I just learned to play guitar a few years ago. Right now, I’m singing full time for a wedding and events band, and we travel all over the United States. This past weekend I was in Los Angeles, and next weekend I’ll be in Florida.”
Jensen also plays piano, saxophone, violin, drums, bass and ukulele.
Eleven-year-old Fairhaven resident Maya Tazares sang Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful.”
“I just must go to Julliard or Berklee, where I can sing and dance,” Maya said. “Right now, I’m dancing hip-hop. Hopefully I’ll make it to Broadway!”
Twelve-year-old Dartmouth resident Abby Rego sang Sarah McLaughlin’s “Angel” for viewers.
“I’ve been in front of the camera three times so far,” Abby said. “I started singing when I was five-years-old. I want to go to Juilliard and when I grow up I want to sing professionally, perform on Broadway, and work as a vocal coach.”
