Go to a grocery store and you’re more likely to linger over the choice of potato chips in the aisles than sticking to the fresh food on the perimeter. But the vendors of the Mattapoisett Farmer’s Market hope to make healthy eating easier by bringing the produce to you.

The market opened at the Old Rochester Regional Junior High on Tuesday, June 5, with a bevy of fresh products, from strawberries and herbs to natural treats for dogs.

“I like to describe the market as the all important perimeter of grocery store shopping,” said market manager Janice Leary-Jones. “We have all the items that are available on the perimeter, which is the best place to shop, and then we have some really phenomenal items from the aisles.”

Leary-Jones said that the market also gives customers the opportunity to learn more about the origin of their food.

“There’s nothing better than being able to talk with your farmers,” she said.

With vendors from the South Coast, another main focus of the weekly event is to support local businesses and keep money in the local economy, said Leary-Jones.

Although some Tuesdays may not be optimal outdoor shopping weather, Leary-Jones said the vendors will be there rain or shine, and she hopes crowds won’t be scared off by a little bad weather.

“I think it’s important for people to know that the farmers are out in the field rain or shine, and that it’s helpful to support them,” she said.

Visit the Mattapoisett Farmer’s Market on the grounds of the Old Rochester Regional Junior High School every Tuesday until October 16 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
