WITH VIDEO: Carolers gather at Tinkhamtown Chapel for old-fashioned sing-along

Dec 22, 2012

Nearly 80 people packed the Tinkhamtown Chapel on Saturday night for the 61st annual Christmas Carol Sing-Along.

The event's popularity has grown over the years, often attracting more guests than can comfortably fit inside of the small chapel, said Nancy Tinkham, a member of the chapel's association.

“I’ve been doing it for over 40 years and my husband has been doing it for even longer,” Tinkham said.

Every year, local residents gather to sing classic Christmas carols such as “O Holy Night,” “Silent Night,” and “Jingle Bells.” In between each song, guests are encouraged to perform a solo for the crowd. Ben Bungert of Mattapoisett gave the first solo performance a cappella.

Gail Roberts, Tinkham’s niece, played the organ and organized the sing-along.

Roberts, who is also the Director of Plumb Library, said she is excited to take the helm of an event that has been a family tradition since she was a little girl.

“It’s been going on for several generations,” Roberts said. “It’s a lot of fun, especially when the children get involved. It’s become a big tradition for many local families.”
