Vikings defeat Bulldogs in first powderpuff match up
The Wareham senior girls proved to be tough competition for Old Rochester Regional in the first powderpuff game held in the Viking’s stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Vikings defeated the Lady Bulldogs 22-7.
ORR’s junior and senior girls usually play against each other, but Principal Mike Devoll wants to start a new tradition.
“It does nothing for school spirit, and it becomes more divisive then uniting,” said Devoll. “What better way than to get all of the seniors playing together against another school.”
He reached out to his peer in Wareham, Scott Palladino, who was on board with the idea and agreed to host it.
The Wareham girls started off strong, scoring early on.
“The first quarter was a shock,” said Devoll. “After the first quarter I thought they played great.”
Maggie Wiggin, a tri-athlete, agreed that the Lady Vikings were more aggressive than their tri-town counterparts.
“They’re strong. They’re not letting go,” she said.
The Lady Bulldogs spent a week practicing with coaches Devoll and Greg Lyons.
“We had a playbook,” said Wiggin. “We’re sticking to a few [plays].”
The girls inched toward the end zone several times but only managed one touchdown by Morgan Middleton with less than a minute and a half on the timer.
On the other side of the field, Paige Fehskens said the game was a good experience all around.
“I thought it was a well-played game from both teams and clean,” she said. “I think it was great to bring rivals together.”
Next year the tradition will continue with a powderpuff game at ORR.
