Wareham Police arrested a 45-year-old Marion man for operating under the influence on Sunday, Jan. 27, after he reportedly struck another car from behind at a red light with a child inside his vehicle.

Police say the crash occurred around 6 p.m. on Cranberry Highway at Main Avenue. Officer Blaise Lalli responded to the scene, and after an investigation it was determined that Marion resident Konstantin Kostin had caused the accident.

Kostin, an Olympic figure skater from Latvia, most recently judged the men’s figure skating program at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea last year.

According to reports, Kostin appeared to be impaired and was placed under arrest for operating under influence of liquor, operating under the influence with child endangerment and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Police said the child in Kostin’s car was uninjured and the driver of the other car involved was transported to Tobey Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A family member later arrived to collect the child from Wareham Police.

Kostin was transported to the Wareham Police Department where he was processed. He was due in court on Jan. 28.
