Without major sponsor Rochester Road Race canceled
Potential participants in the annual Rochester Road Race have nowhere to run as organizers cancel the event due to a lack of funds.
Held the week before the Rochester Country Fair, this August would have marked the race’s 10th anniversary.
In a letter to Selectmen, race organizer Chuck Kantner wrote that without the support of a major corporate sponsor the event would cost more than the amount raised.
Race proceeds are donated to Damien’s Place, a Wareham food pantry.
“In prior years, we have been able to secure the support of one or more major sponsors, Covanta SEMASS for example, which enabled the race to cover much of its fixed costs,” Kantner wrote. “Unfortunately, we have not been able to secure this type of sponsorship for 2015.”
For the past few years, the Rochester-based waste-to-energy facility has donated $2,500 to the race and $2,500 to the Country Fair.
Selectmen Chair Rich Nunes said this year Covanta SEMASS instead awarded $5,000 to the Country Fair.
“I’m a little disappointed with SEMASS,” Nunes said. “It’s a shame. This would have been the tenth year. It was a nice little run and a good event.”
Without the money, Kantner said that paying for fixed costs, such as insurance, police, EMTs and timing the race, would leave nothing for Damien’s Place.
“And if we have bad weather, which reduces day-of-race entries, we could end up in the red,” Kantner wrote.
Looking back Kantner said organizers were proud of the fun and fundraising the event provided.
“We leave proud that over the years the race has raised significant funds to help address the community’s food needs, provided a great activity for its residents (many of whom trained and ran as families,) and brought hundreds of runners into town for a fun, wholesome event,” Kantner wrote.
