'Women in Waders' on the hunt for shellfish

May 21, 2015

South Coast women are being encouraged to step outside and into nearby waterways as part of the Buzzards Bay Coalition’s “Women in Waders” free event series that kicked off May 20.

Through the nonprofit’s Bay Adventures program, outings for adults and families are offered year round to connect residents with the outdoors.

Wednesday’s activity, called “Seeking Shellfish,” was the first of three events open to area women. Buzzards Bay Coalition Engagement Coordinator Sarah Gossett brought waders, quahog rakes and “pecks” – special buckets designed to hold the clams.

Before the group of six walked into the water at Marion’s Silvershell Beach, Gossett gave a brief lessons on quahogging. The event was catch and release, unless participants had a shellfish license.

The second adventure in the “Women in Waders” series is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27 where women will be “Bugging Out” at the Bogs in Mattapoisett. The event will be focused on learning about the water bugs that inhabit the river.

The final event, “Crazy About Crabs,” will be held Wednesday, June 3 at Little Harbor Beach, located at the end of Little Harbor Road in Wareham. The blue crab is the focus of this program. Participants will learn how to pick up the quick crabs without getting pinched.

Registration is required for all Bay Adventures. To RSVP, call 508-999-6363 ex. 219 or email bayadventures@savebuzzardsbay.org.
