Young author makes fiction debut with 'The Demonic Eyes'
Like any author who wants to promote her new book, Jackie LeDuc is making the rounds to local literary hubs with a stack of novels in tow. What’s different about LeDuc, however, is that she’s not old enough to drive.
At 15, LeDuc is working hard to make her dream of becoming a professional writer a reality. On Nov. 5, the Acushnet resident visited the Mattapoisett Library to sign her first novel, “The Demonic Eyes.”
“This is just a surreal experience. I feel like Hannah Montana! One day I’m walking through the halls at school, and the next I’m a published author,” said LeDuc.
The Bishop Stang student is a familiar sight at the Mattapoisett Library, where she’s met with other aspiring authors in a young adult writer’s group.
LeDuc's novel, centered around a teenage boy, has a supernatural edge to it. Damien Winters is a guy with serious troubles at home and at school. Nighttime walks are his chance to escape, but little does he know that life is about to get a lot more out of control. Amidst satanic murders in the woods and a peculiar new family in the haunted house next door, Damien begins to discover his own mysterious gift, one that will come in useful as chaos ensues.
“I really wanted to appeal to the idea of suicide and relay a more positive message,” said LeDuc.
Despite keeping up with her schoolwork and being a multi-instrumentalist (LeDuc plays the flute, electric guitar and keyboard.) the young author consistently sets aside time to write.
In addition to her novel, LeDuc has published poetry and is in the midst of completing her first children’s story.
“I have to balance my schedule when it comes to school,” she said. “I usually get home, do homework, then write. I always have to be writing.”
She also has an altruistic side. At her Mattapoisett signing, LeDuc gave three dollars of every purchase to the library. On Nov. 22, she will be at the Acushnet Kitty Shelter, where she also volunteers, to sign and sell books. She will donate money from sales to the shelter.
Along the way, LeDuc hopes to offer encouragement to other young writers, just like she has gotten from older writers such as Wareham’s Scott Blagden.
“If I could say one thing to young writers, it’d be to never give up. Keep doing it. Never stop reading!”
