Officials discuss widening Acushnet Road
Acushnet Road is in need of some engineering, says Highway Surveyor Barry Denham, but first he has to figure out who owns what.
A section of the road was never approved, said Denham.
“We have an irregular layout of what appears to be Acushnet Road and the neighboring properties,” he said.
Denham said about half a mile of the road needs to be evaluated. Ideally, Denham would like to establish a 40-foot layout on the road, he said.
In some places, the road is as narrow as 32 feet.
“If we don’t own the property, then it’s impossible to widen the pavement,” said Denham. And it’s important, he said, “so the neighbors know where their land ends and our land starts.”
Part of the road abuts a Buzzards Bay Coalition property, which has a land conservation restriction.
Since part of the land was funded through the federal government, Selectmen said there could be issues with redrawing boundaries.
Town Administrator Mike Gagne said once the property is mapped out, it could go to a vote at Town Meeting. After that, the town could discuss widening portions of the road with the coalition.
