Unpaid bills prompt action

Aug 7, 2013

Marion is owed about $280,000 in unpaid ambulance bills dating back to 2008, and the town is looking to collect. Town Administrator Paul Dawson asked Selectmen to change the town’s ambulance billing policy at the board’s Aug. 6 meeting.

Currently, Marion does not have to pursue unpaid bills less than $75. However, the average unpaid bill is around $200. Dawson said the policy lacks an enforcement provision.

“There’s no hammer in the policy to make these bills go away,” he said, and asked to raise the minimum amount the town can write-off. Selectmen asked Dawson to consider filing suit against people with outstanding bills in small claims court.
