Coast Guard Auxiliary granted space in Marion
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary of Marion has secured space at 13 Atlantis Drive to be used for boating and water safety courses.
For close to 40 years, auxiliary members used town buildings, such as the Marion Music Hall and the Town House, to teach the classes.
Recently, the auxiliary has used space at Lockheed Martin Sippican, Inc. Flotilla Commander Lee Harrison and Flotilla Commander Elect Warren Washburn Jr. appeared before Selectmen at the Dec. 3 meeting to request using rooms in Atlantis Drive.
Currently home to the Marion Recreation Department and a handful of town offices, Washburn said an upstairs room would be used for storage and a large meeting area on the first floor suits the group’s needs at Atlantis Drive.
Selectmen Jody Dickerson and Stephen Cushing had no objections.
“They do a lot for the community,” Dickerson said.
Founded in 1939, the auxiliary will celebrate its 75th anniversary in September. In addition to teaching water safety, auxiliary members provide support to various events that take place in Buzzards Bay, such as the Swim the Bay fundraiser.
Cushing said the move is a welcome one for the community.
“As a boater I’m very supportive of what they do,” he said. “Hopefully this will give them a permanent, or at least long term, solution.”
Washburn thanked the Selectmen.
“Marion has been a very important part of our history,” he said.
