'Legally Blonde: The Musical' takes center stage at Tabor
“Legally Blonde,” the story of a peppy, clueless blonde coed who enrolls at Harvard Law School, was a hit in theaters. Now, the farce about the unlikely law student who always wears pink is coming to Tabor Academy in musical form.
“We break out into song whenever we feel it’s necessary,” said senior Alex Osgood.
Osgood plays Brooke Wyndham, the fitness queen on trial for killing her husband, and is also a dance captain for the production.
“I do a dance where I jump rope and sing at the same time,” she said. “It’s pretty fun.”
The cast is excited to bring a more modern tale to the main stage after several years with musicals set in the mid-20th century.
“The music is a lot more relatable and something that’s going to bring a bigger crowd,” said Allie Dawson, who plays the comical hairdresser who befriends Elle.
Megane Monograin, who secured the title role, agreed.
“It’s just so much energy. I feel like it’s just so happy all the time,” she said.
Monograin, a senior and dance captain, has participated in the school’s musicals since freshmen year, but hasn’t had a speaking role in two years. She was more than shocked when she received an email with her name beside the part of Elle Woods.
Since then, Monograin has gotten into character by comparing her life at Tabor to Elle’s at Harvard.
“It’s funny to think there are so many similarities. I came here not knowing what was going on. I almost left last year. Everything relates to it," said the Texas native.
The cast said the musical version of “Legally Blonde” has the same plot as the movie, but the addition of songs gives some characters more stage time.
Xan Marsella, who plays one of the lead sorority girls from Elle’s days at UCLA, said, “Besides Elle, we kind of drive the show.”
Director Mark Howland chose the play because of its many female parts, including the Greek-like chorus of sorority sisters that keep Elle positive in the brave new world of the Ivy League.
Also helping to set the scene is a rosy hued lights, said Lighting Designer Grace Fors.
“You have to have a lot of pink because it’s ‘Legally Blonde,’" said Fors. "We have four different colors that are side lights, and three of them are just different shades of pink.”
And while pink isn’t exactly a color that runs rampant through the halls of Tabor, Monograin is confident that Elle would end up fitting in and excelling at the school just as she does at Harvard.
“She would be in BC Calc and impress everyone,” said Monograin.
The curtain goes up at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20 to Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Fireman Auditorium. Tickets are $10 at the door.
