Rochester School Committee candidate Tim Scholz

With six years on the Rochester Memorial School Committee, candidate Tim Scholz hopes voters will consider his experience in the upcoming election.

“When I was first elected to the committee, I was pretty naive about the whole process,” he said. “Since then, I’ve seen how the budget is put together and gone through two teacher negotiations. Each time you do that you get wiser.”

Scholz moved to Rochester with his wife and two daughters because of the school’s reputation. His daughters, now in their early 20s, graduated from RMS before he was elected.

“So they’re long out of the system,” he said. But his motivation for running remains the same as it was six years ago, to develop a good school system.

An engineer, Scholz says his background complements the other members strengths. Some are interested in policy while others focus on curriculum. For Scholz, he sees his role as “using logical and data based decisions on the committee.”

If Scholz is re-elected, he said he looks forward to developing a plan for RMS's infrastructure.

Following an expansion and renovations in 2012, Scholz said administrators and committee members haven’t had to worry about capital upgrades. That will soon change, he said.

“I want the committee to consider capital purchases over time," said Scholz. "We had a nice period where everything is new and on warranty for two years. That’s about to come to an end.”

Keeping up with technology changes, infrastructure upgrades and seeing new Principal Derek Medeiros become acclimated to the school are other goals, he said.

“People want to live in Rochester because of our great school system,” said Scholz. “A town’s character relies on that.”
