Tabor Academy baseball earns championship status

The Tabor Academy baseball team was down, but not yet out, in the final inning of the league's championship game last weekend.

Playing as the No. 1 seed in the Blackburn Tournament, the Seawolves overcame a four run deficit to beat Cushing Academy. The tournament is held at Worcester Academy and pits the four best teams from the Central New England Prep School Baseball League against each other.

The win marked the first time in 35 years that the Seawolves took home a trophy from the tournament.

“It was quite the experience,” said Head Coach Tom Angelo. “Not only because we won, but how that was done.”

Angelo said Junior Captain P.J. Poulin's pitching pushed the team to victory.

The Mattapoisett resident pitched a no-hitter in the team’s first game against Philips Andover Academy. Angelo said Poulin’s fastball clocked in at 90 miles per hour and his accuracy was spot on. Instead of benching him for round two, Angelo asked Poulin to throw some more in the championship game.

“We kept him warmed up, and he started the second game with the agreement that he would only throw 30 pitches. That’s the limit we gave him,” Angelo said.

In the championship game, Cushing Academy was unable to score for three innings with Poulin on the mound.

The game started out promising. Tabor scored a couple of runs early, but later a Tabor fielding error let Cushing score twice.

The Seawolves opponent tacked on more runs. Though down 6-2 in the final inning, the team refused to give up.

“We had to claw our way back and we did. Earlier in the season, I realized this was a championship caliber team and they proved it,” Angelo said. “When we entered that last inning down by four, no one that bench thought we were going to lose.”

The comeback didn’t feature a dramatic home run, just fundamental baseball.

The Seawolves found themselves close to victory after two walks, two passed balls and one hit.

“Before we knew it, we were in a tied ball game with runners in scoring position,” Angelo said.

With one out in the inning, Mason Johnson took the plate. Earlier in the game, Johnson had been responsible for the error that allowed Cushing to score first.

“This was a chance for him to go from the outhouse to the penthouse,” Angelo said. “I told him to look for something up in the zone and hit it to the outfield.”

Johnson hit a shallow pop fly. Poulin, who was on third base, tagged up and crossed home plate.

“It was an incredible win,” Angelo said.

And they hope to do it again next year.

The team loses one senior this year. With so much talent, Angelo said his only problem will be deciding who to bench.

“The hardest part will be to get the kids in the games. There are so many talented players,” he said. “It’s been a special year.”

The team had 19 wins and 5 losses for the season.
