New tennis courts open in Mattapoisett

Jun 2, 2014

A year after Town Meeting voters approved $170,000 for the restoration of two tennis courts on Hammond Street, those courts are officially open to the public.

Mattapoisett Recreation member and former chair Jeremy Collier spearheaded the project and took the first swing on Saturday with John Connell.

Connell, of Field Engineering Co., was the contractor for the project and said the five-inch thick slab of concrete is built to last. The court has steel rods running through it and was created by Cape and Island Tennis with a method called post-tensioning that will last indefinitely, according to Connell and Collier.

Highway Surveyor Barry Denham and the Highway Department also helped get the courts ready, said Collier.

Now that the courts are open, anyone in town can use them.

Collier said there will be no private lessons on the courts though later in the year, the Recreation Department does hope to offer lessons..

"It's first come, first serve. We want to have people be able to come and enjoy it," he said.

A shuffleboard court has also been added to the area, and in coming months Mattapoisett Recreation will add a "tot lot" play area for young children using funds approved at this May's Town Meeting.

Collier also said he eventually hopes to have a bathroom and water available at the site.
