Clothes, prom dates on list of revised handbook rules

Jun 12, 2014

Jeans with holes are out at the junior high and so are prom dates older than 20 at the high school, following the approval of revised handbooks for Old Rochester Regional.

Silas Coellner and Mike Parker, assistant principals of the junior high and senior high, respectively, discussed a handful of changes made to the rulebooks at Wednesday night’s ORR School Committee meeting.

While holey jeans will be restricted next year, the junior high will no longer prohibit body piercings. Until now, earrings were the only piercing allowed, though students, and even some teachers. have nose or eyebrow rings, said Coellner.

“It’s very hard to enforce,” he said.

The schools have also updated their bullying policies and added ALICE, the new lockdown system.

At the high school, Parker said no one over the age of 20 will be able to attend dances. Though there was no trouble at this year's prom, he said there were a few older dates.

“We kind of think that’s a little old to be at the dances and the proms,” Parker said.

He also said there will be more consistent enforcement of the policy against cell phones and electronic devices in hallways and classrooms. Teachers may allow students to use devices for lessons; however, and students are already permitted to use phones during lunch.
