'Avon' calling: Town Administrator part-time until Aug. 1

Jul 22, 2014

New Town Administrator Micheal McCue will split his time between his former employer, the town of Avon, and Rochester until Aug. 1.

Last month, Selectmen chose McCue out of two finalists to replace outgoing administrator Rich LaCamera.

Monday marked McCue’s third full day on the job; however, he said his time would be spent between Rochester and Avon for now. A Mansfield resident, McCue served as Avon's Town Administrator since 2007.

“We’re in a transition period,” McCue said. “In Rochester and Avon the [Selectmen] agreed to let me tie up any loose ends in Avon.

Until he starts full-time, McCue will be in Rochester on Mondays and Wednesdays.

McCue attended his first Selectmen meeting as Town Administrator on Monday. Clocking in at 17 minutes with no one on the agenda, that Selectmen's meeting might prove to be McCue's briefest.

He thanked board members for hiring him during the Town Administrator’s report.

“I can’t express my gratitude for the board’s confidence in moving forward with me as the new Town Administrator,” McCue said. “I’ll do my best to make you proud and happy that you brought me here.”

Since arriving, he has been busy meeting department heads.

“I’m getting an awful lot of insight from the employees that are already here,” McCue said, adding he’s appreciative of their support.

Though he just started, McCue made board members aware of two matters he has studied. McCue had been involved with the Southeastern Regional Planning & Economic Development organization. The group provides assistance to area towns regarding transportation, economic development and environmental protection initiatives.

“Now that I’m back in the area I’m going to re-forge some relationships I had that will be beneficial to the town of Rochester,” McCue said.

Closer to home, he pitched board members on an idea that would approve two, state-approved credit cards to purchase gasoline in emergencies for town vehicles. A recent gas shortage at the town’s fuel depot prompted McCue to approach the board with the proposal.

“Basically, it’s a gas only charge card that is accepted at most gas stations,” he said. “We did set up a system like that in the town from which I’m coming from, but it does not have it’s own fuel depot, unlike Rochester,” he said.

Selectmen will consider the proposal.

McCue said he would have more to report at the next meeting.

“I wish I had more to present,” he said. “I look forward to providing many more detailed reports in the coming meetings.”
