Worker impaled after 15-foot fall in Rochester

Wareham paramedics offer assistance
Mar 9, 2015

A 61-year-old Taunton man remained conscious during treatment after becoming impaled on a piece of rebar.

Wareham paramedics were called to scene to assist Rochester first responders. It took more than one hour to extricate the man.

A Life Flight helicopter ambulance flew the victim to Rhode Island Hospital Trauma Center after he fell 15 feet at a construction site. The accident occurred at the Zero Waste Solutions facility being built at 35 Cranberry Highway.

In 2013, ABC Disposal Services, Inc. broke ground at the site, which will house a 90,000-square foot waste processing facility.

Police Chief Paul Magee said first responders were on the site for two and a half hours Saturday morning. Police received a 911 call at 8:38 a.m.

Magee said the man’s current condition is not known at this time.

In addition to police, Rochester Firefighters, paramedics and EMTs responded to the scene.

According to fire officials, two engines were dispatched to help extricate the man and set up a landing zone for the helicopter.

The victim required a “very technical extrication” that required cutting the rebar. A fire department press release stated the man spoke to first responders throughout the ordeal despite his injuries.

Calls to Rochester Fire Chief Scott Weigel have not yet been returned.

It’s unclear at this time what caused the man to fall.

A U.S. Department of Labor spokesman said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is authorized inspect workplaces for compliance.

Ted Fitzgerald, the regional director of public affairs, said his office would contact OSHA’s Braintree location to see if officials there were notified of the accident and what action, if any, would be taken in response.

More information will be posted when available.
