St. Gabriel's seeks funds for solar project
St. Gabriel’s Church wants to set a bright example when it comes to reducing its impact on the environment.
Church members hope to raise $34,800 by Sept. 1 to purchase a 16.2 kilowatt solar panel system for the sanctuary’s south-facing roof. The system would offset 88 percent of the building’s annual electricity consumption.
The system’s total cost is $64,800, though the church has received a Green Grant from the Diocese of Massachusetts for $5,000 and other donations totaling $25,000.
On Aug. 16, representatives form Sunbug Solar will present project details at the 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. services.
If installed, the system is projected to save the church more than $150,000 in electricity costs over the next 30 years.
Donations of any amount are encouraged. Make checks payable to “St. Gabriel’s Church” with “Solar Project” on the memo line. Mail checks to: St. Gabriel’s Church, P.O. Box 545, Marion, MA 02738.
