Rochester Land Trust seeks to upgrade conservation property
Improvements to a conservation property on New Bedford Road are on the way now that the Mattapoisett and Rochester Land Trusts have agreed to co-manage the site.
Located at 240 New Bedford Road, the Oldfield Farm property is 80 acres of land that includes an open field, vernal pool and short trail.
“The Rochester Land Trust is happy to be involved with this property, and we think it’s a place that Rochester folks will enjoy,” said land trust President David Smith. “We hope to make it even better over the next few years.”
The property was donated to the Mattapoisett Land Trust by Edith and Eliot Shoolman in 1984, many years before the Rochester Land Trust was founded.
Smith said plans call for extending the trail to the Mattapoisett River.
“We also plan on clearing additional trails to open areas where we hope to install benches and picnic tables,” Smith said. “There are some very nice spots there.”
Smith said visitors shouldn’t confuse the conservation property with a private parcel located next door at 232 New Bedford Road.
Known as Melansen’s Olde Field Farm, the land includes a house and historical buildings. Smith asked that hikers stay on the public land.
“There’s been some confusion because of the properties’ names,” Smith said
To access the trail, walk along the field’s west edge and across its back end to the trail, which runs south to the river.
Smith said the walk from the kiosk to the river is about 15 minutes.
