PARCC scores lower than expected

While official results from a new standardized state test aren’t yet publicly available, Superintendent Doug White said initial scores showed students across the state lagging.

Test scores for all schools will be released in December for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College Careers (PARCC).

Tri-town schools began shifting to the new exam last year as MCAS is phased out.

The new test is conducted online and aligns with the recently adopted Common Core curriculum.

“At first blush it looks like PARCC scores are a little lower, which is to be expected when a new test is administered,” White told the Marion School Committee on Oct. 7.

White also told committee members there is some uncertainty about what tests the state will adopt later this year.

On Nov. 17, the Massachusetts Board of Education is scheduled to vote on whether to administer PARCC, MCAS, a combination of the two or a completely different method.

“Among the superintendents there is a divide on whether to adopt PARCC,” White said. “Due to the political environment or a lack of technology in some districts.”

He said, superintendents did agree that the assessment should provide timely data to students and staff, identify learning gaps and effectively measure a student’s growth, among other benchmarks.

White also informed the board that the Massachusetts Teachers Association is advocating for a three year moratorium on standardized tests.

“That’s working through the Board of Education right now,” White said.
