Marion voters approve spraying for moths

Oct 27, 2015

Marion Special Town Meeting voters approved a $10,000 appropriation to deal with a potential moth infestation next spring.

Following the gypsy and winter moth infestation of this past spring and summer, Tree Warden Margie Baldwin did some research and proposed spraying trees in the town’s main streets and in the Village.

Baldwin said the funds would only be used if there is another outbreak of the bugs next year. She also said there are two insecticides that may be used.

“I’m assured by Bartlett Tree that they both have low toxicity. It’s not harmful to children or pets or bees,” Baldwin said.

Some in town took issue with the limited number of trees that will be sprayed.

“I pay taxes in town just as much as the Village. Why don’t you ask for more money and do the whole town?” said BJ Barros of Wareham Road.

Barros also asked why the spraying wouldn’t include Route 6.

Baldwin said that road belongs to the state and is not Marion’s to spray, but the proposed spraying will help the whole town.
