Couple searches for engagement ring lost on Halloween

Nov 6, 2015

It’s wasn't a trick or a treat on Halloween night when Joelyn Conde realized her engagement ring was missing.

While preparing to go candy collecting with her daughter, Conde gave her fiancé, Ian Moniz, her ring for safe keeping.

“My hands get chilly so my ring gets loose, so I didn’t want to lose it,” said Conde, who currently lives in New Bedford.

The trio set out from the home of Conde’s parents in Rochester and at some point, the ring fell out of Moniz’s pocket.

“It happened in a matter of forty-five minutes,” said Conde.

Thinking it was in her parents’ yard, the family did a careful search.

“We’ve gone to the yard four times with three different metal detectors,” she said.

They didn’t stop there. Conde and Moniz uprooted the mats in their car and unbolted the seats to make sure the ring hadn’t slipped out of sight.

Moniz had stopped at Cumberland Farms in Marion that night, so they looked there too, but with no luck.

“We thought since it was Halloween, maybe a little kid or a parent picked it up. Maybe they even forgot they had found it. Maybe it’s in a trick or treat bag,” Conde said.

The word has gone out across Facebook, including a post from the Rochester Police Department, and Conde has filed two police reports and is checking Craig’s List ads and pawn shops in case the  ring turns up there.

“We’re pretty heartbroken over it because it was given to us by [Moniz’s] grandfather. It was custom made for us,” said the bride to be. “Frankly, I don’t want to replace it. It’s never going to be the same.”

Conde said the ring has a round center stone and a square halo with diamonds on both sides of the band.

Naturally, losing the ring has been stressful, for the couple who were engaged last April.

Conde, a security officer at Lockheed Martin in Marion, and Moniz, an employee at Bath Fitter in Bridgewater, originally met while students at Old Colony.

The two began dating a few years later and, “We kind of just knew. It was a great feeling,” said Conde.

While the search for the ring hasn't turned up any leads, the couple won’t be slowing down the preparations for their big day.

The wedding is set for May 7, where Conde will hopefully end the day wearing both her engagement ring and her wedding ring.
