May 23, 2016

Helen F. Nichols-Barrette, 87, died Sunday, May 22 at Island Terrace Nursing Home in Lakeville. She was the wife of the late Normand Barrette who died 29 years ago.

Born in New Bedford, January 27, 1929, she was lovingly cared for by her grandparents Edward and Annie (Little) Hughes and her caring aunt, Ethel Hughes.

Helen loved her family but nursing was a close second. She worked as an LPN at Tobey Hospital in Wareham for 38 years. She was always recognized and stopped by former patients she had cared for during her long career. She loved to dance, host cookouts, was an avid gardener and a pro at crocheting. She has made quilts for each of the grand kids dorm rooms and hundreds of crocheted doggie and kitty squares that she gave as gifts and donated to local animal shelters. Helen was also well travelled; her favorite destinations were China, Ireland, Scotland, Greece and Italy.
Before entering Island Terrace Nursing Home, she lived in Plymouth for 13 years, enjoying her Japanese gardens and her neighbors.

She is survived by her children, Michelle and husband Stephen from Plymouth, Deb Brierly and husband Chris from Wareham, Tara Flanagan and husband Brian from Green Cove Springs, FL and Seth Nichols from Onset; her grandchildren, Christopher Marshall of Muncie, Indiana, Stephen Marshall Jr. and his wife Amy of Woburn, Sarah Andrews of Quincy, Eric Marshall of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Kaitlin Andrews of San Diego, California and Ben Pittsley of Easton, Maryland; and her great grandchild, Jena Marshall of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 26 at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 124 Front St., Marion at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Little Neck Cemetery, Marion. Visiting hours will be Wednesday at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham from 4 to 7 p.m.
