Concert band sounds off
The Marion Concert Band will open its 2016 season with a program of patriotic music in celebration of Independence Day on Friday, July 1 at 7 p.m. The free concert is under the direction of Tobias Monte and is open to the public. It will be held at the bandstand at Island Wharf off of Front Street.
Among the pieces that will be played are “God Bless the U.S.A.,” “America the Beautiful” and “Fugue on Yankee Doodle.”
Road race
Registration is open for the Mattapoisett Road Race to be held on Independence Day.
The five-mile course winds through Mattapoisett Village around the Ned’s Point Lighthouse and back to Shipyard Park at the Town Wharf.
Race proceeds are awarded to college bound runners at Old Rochester Regional High School.
Register online at www.mattapoisettroadrace.com. The cost is $20 until June 30. T-shirt pickup and in person registration, $20, can be done at Shipyard Park on July 3 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and July 4 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Registration the day of the event is $25. The race begins at 9 a.m. in front of Shipyard Park.
Fourth of July Parade
The Town of Marion and the Benjamin D. Cushing VFW Post 2425 of Marion will hold the annual Fourth of July Parade, on July 4 at 9 a.m. The parade will form at 8 a.m. in the ball field behind the Town House.
Applications for participating are available at the Town House or can be submitted at www.marionrecreation.com.

Horse show
The annual Marion Horse Show returns for its 69th year in Washburn Park and features several classes for competitors.
There will also be facepainting and pony rides for kids. The show begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.
