Father allegedly shoots son during altercation in Mattapoisett
On Wednesday night, a verbal argument turned violent in Mattapoisett, leaving one man with a gunshot wound, and another arrested.
Mattapoisett Police say Jonathan McCarthy, 29, of 189 North St., received a non-life threatening injury after being shot in the bicep after an altercation with his father Michael McCarthy, 63, also of 189 North St.
The incident took place around 7 p.m. A resident called the police after hearing a loud argument at his next door neighbor's house followed by what he believed to be a gunshot.
Officers were dispatched to the house where they found the two men. Michael McCarthy, the suspected shooter and owner of Mattapoisett Bird Works, was arrested and charged with assault and battery by discharging a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling and assault and battery on a household member.
He was arraigned in Wareham District Court on Thursday.
Jonathan McCarthy was transported to Rhode Island Hospital Trauma Center by Mattapoisett EMS on Wednesday night. He has since been released.
