Shellfish closure at Brandt Island

Sep 3, 2016

The Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries has begun the process of transplanting contaminated quahogs to the area just north of the marina docks in Brandt Island Cove.

These shellfish are from the Taunton River, and are part of a settlement from the 2003 Bouchard Oil Spill. The quahogs will naturally filter contaminates out of their systems, but until then, it is not permitted to harvest them.

There are signs stating “Closed to Shellfishing” and “Areas Planted with Contaminated Shellfish” in the area.

Shellfishing will remain closed there until at least November 2017.
