Tornadoes, Renoir, and cotton candy stained glass: student achievements on display

Rochester Memorial students got a chance to show off both creativity and logic Thursday evening, when the school hosted a joint Science & Art Show.

The science projects were on display in the cafeteria, and ran the gamut. Students constructed potato batteries and tornado simulators (out of soda bottles). Tables featuring cotton candy stained glass (squares of cotton dyed with cotton candy) and .

Student Brenna O'Donnell was particularly excited with her project, called "Jiggly Crystals." She studied whether polymer gel crystals, when soaked in water, could absorb colors and keep the color even if they were dried out and rehydrated. While she found that the colors did absorb, they didn't remain if the crystal dried out again.

Nevertheless, she carried out a full experiment. "I tried all types of coloring," she said. "Food coloring, cabbage dye, citric acid - what I could find in the kitchen."

Meanwhile, the art classroom boasted coil pots featuring snakes, flowers and fanciful designs. In the entry foyer, band teacher Christine Williamson and some of her students performed.

Student art was displayed in every hallway. Student-created ducks lined the media center corridor. One hallway near the cafeteria displayed cutouts of the students, surfing hand-painted waves. Other paintings were based on "liberty" or on paintings by Renoir.
