The Marion Council on Aging has adopted a cell phone policy for its drivers.

The Board of Selectmen voted to approve the policy, which bans drivers from any cell phone use, at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The draft has five bullet points, which disallow the use of using personal digital assistants (PDAs) and cell phones, either hand-held or hands-free, while driving. It also states that drivers can not make or answer phone calls or read or respond to text messages or emails while driving.

If drivers need to make an emergency call, they are required to pull over and park in a safe location first. Additionally, employees who are charged with traffic violations due to phone use will be solely responsible for all liabilities.

The policy also states that employees in possession of company cell phones or PDAs are expected to protect the equipment from loss, damage or theft.

Town Administrator Paul Dawson said the policy could become a building block for a similar policy for all town employees.

“It begs the larger question of a cell phone policy for all departments,” Dawson said. “We may have one that encompasses much that is in this one.”
