Old Colony's football team may have lost in its bid to move forward in the Mayflower Championship, but the team's year has still been one for the history books.

The Old Colony Cougars lost 8-13 to Sacred Heart High School on October 29, while attempting to capture the Mayflower Athletic Conference's "Large Division" championship.

While the team won't move on, the players made history recently when the team won its first Mayflower Championship title in 20 years. It claimed the "Small Division Championship" title over all over vocational schools classified as "small" in the Mayflower Conference. To earn the title, the Cougars defeated Cape Cod Tech Regional Technical High School on October 21.

Old Colony Athletic Director Matt Trahan said that he was thrilled with the coaching staff after the Small Division Championship win. "It was very physical and full throttle for the whole game," he said.

The team finished the regular season with a record of 6-1. Its only loss in the regular season was against their Mayflower Conference foe, Sacred Heart High School, in the first game of the year.

Former head football coach Kevin Gonsalves was the last and only coach to win the Mayflower Conference Championship for the Cougars before this year's win. The Cougars won four straight championships from 1993-1997. Gonsalves, now a math teacher at Old Colony, reminisced about the 1997 game.

The 1997 Mayflower Small Division Championship pitted Old Colony against West Bridgewater High School. Gonsalves said that game in 1997 was a very competitive game. "I'm extremely proud that they student-athletes for winning the division championship again this year," he added.
