ORR nurse bringing suicide awareness to community

When it comes to suicide, recognizing the warning signs is important. Old Rochester Regional High School nurse Kim Corrazzini knows this firsthand, and now she’s bringing that training and knowledge to the community.

On Nov. 20, the Bristol County and Plymouth County Regional Coalitions for Suicide Prevention will present safeTALK training at Marion Music Hall at 6 p.m. The goal of the training is to teach anyone aged 15 and over to recognize people with suicidal thoughts, and be able to connect them with suicide first aid resources.

Corrazzini got involved with the coalition after a tragedy struck close to home. In 2014, 18-year-old Conrad Roy, a Mattapoisett resident and recent Old Rochester Regional graduate, committed suicide.

“He was a student in my school that I cared about and took care of,” she said. “It was just a big loss.”

After that, Corrazzini went to training herself. She wants to bring the information that she learned to others.

“We were trying to figure out what to do, so that’s when it all began,” she said. “We wanted to do one more community-based event, and safeTALK was one being offered.”

Corrazzini said it’s important that people recognize the signs, because it’s something many people will have to deal with at some point.

“There have been a couple suicides that have hit close to home for ORR in the last six months or so,” she said. “Hopefully, we’ll reach people outside of the school. It really touches everybody.”
