Can history buffs solve Meeting House graffiti mystery?

Nov 27, 2017

Local history buffs seeking a challenge now have a new puzzle to solve.

The Mattapoisett Friends are looking for anyone who might be able to shed a little light on a historical mystery.

During the painting and repair of the Mattapoisett Friends Meeting House, carved graffiti was found on a trim board 12' off the ground. It reads "Allen Ashley 10/10/68." Mattapoisett Friends member Deena Kinsky reported that the graffiti may be from 1868, as there is an Allen Ashley buried in Rochester who lived from 1840 to 1928.

Right now, Friends Meeting members are guessing that he worked on the roof of the building. If any history buffs or descendants of Ashley can shed light on the carving, they are asked to contact mattquakers@gmail.com.
