First baby born in Tobey Hospital in 2018 named after winter storm

Rochester police officer Nathan Valente is the proud father of the first baby of 2018 born in Tobey Hospital despite the first blizzard of the year.

His son arrived on January 4, during the first snowstorm of the year. Both baby and storm share a name: Grayson.

Valente and wife Stephanie, who live in Fall River, had to drive to the hospital to deliver Grayson in the snow and strong wind.

"It was a complete whiteout," said Nathan Valente. "We couldn't see 10 feet in front of us."

Stephanie Valente said she was surprised Grayson was the first Wareham baby of the year, since usually the first baby is born on the first or second day of the year. She said several other women were in labor at Tobey Hospital at the same time as she was, but Grayson arrived first.

The Valentes had originally decided to name their baby Grayson months ago. A few weeks ago, though, they changed their minds and settled on a different name. But when the baby was born during the storm, the couple knew they had to name him Grayson.

The healthy baby, 8 pounds and 3 ounces and 21 inches long, joins his older sister, who is 2.5 years old.
