Basketball coach still going strong after 40 years, 600 wins

Old Rochester Regional High School varsity girls' basketball coach Bob Hohne has been coaching for 40 years. He's averaged 15 wins a season.

But his 600th win? It was just another game to the seasoned veteran.

"I hate to sound like a [Bill] Belichick or a [Tom] Brady," Hohne laughed after the Lady Bulldogs' 44-24 victory of the Fairhaven Lady Blue Devils, "but wins just sort of arrive as you go. I don't think about the numbers so much, I think about each individual game."

The victory was a fairly easy one, as far as games go. The Lady Bulldogs were ahead by half-time, and continued to extend their lead in the third and fourth quarters.

When it was officially announced that Hohne had won his 600th game, his team led the celebration. The Lady Bulldogs emerged from the locker room with a poster for their coach, emblazoned with glittering golden letters: "Congratulations Coach Hohne! 600 Wins with the Lady Bulldogs."

Junior forward Maddie Demanche had praise for her coach after his record achievement. "I'm so happy for him," she said. "He deserves it after all his hard work. He loves the game, he spends so much time studying it."

Hohne has no plans for retirement yet, but he said that when he did take a moment to look back, his wins would mean a lot to him. "When I have time, I'll probably think about the accomplishments a lot more," he said, before the Lady Bulldogs boarded the bus back home.
