Current students are top dog in alumni basketball game
The current girls' basketball team at Old Rochester Regional High School strutted its stuff on March 16, defeating an opposing team filled with alumni 46-42.
Before the game began, alumni team member Dena Xifaras ('95) noted that in the previous game, the alumni team had forced an overtime game before losing to the current players.
"This year our aim is to do at least as well, if not better," she said, minutes before the game began. Unfortunately, that alumni players couldn't meet that goal.
Busy lives got in the way a bit, for several of them. The current Old Rochester players have the advantage of frequent practice, as well as the attentive eye and training of longtime coach Bob Hohne.
Members of the alumni team didn't have the same advantages. "Some of us still play regularly, as part of a league in New Bedford," Xifaras explained. "Others of us just shake off the rust and play here, once per year."
Disadvantages aside, the alumni team—which included players ranging from the class of 1994 (Nicole Olivier) to the class of 2017 (Sophie Church) was the first to score points.
The team wasn't able to maintain the lead though, quickly falling to a several-point deficit as alumni players faced off against current students, incuding junior forward Maddie Demanche, sophomore center Mary Butler, and freshman guard Cassidy Yeomans.
The game was held as a fundraiser for the Old Rochester Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
